Founded in 1959 the Mansfield UK based boat builder produced for many years a line of cabin cruisers and semi displacement yachts. In 1996 with a fresh injection of designs and ideas, managing director Richard Oddie drawing on his engineering background pushed the designs a stage further. The new line had a two pronged attack, comprising the fully planning Challenger series and the semi displacement Cruisader models. The first product for the new company was a top of the range model the 440 Challenger, following with the very popular 330 Challenger, The Crusader 400 and the Crusader 310. 2 years later the 440 challenger was redesigned to separate the different layouts the 440 2 cabin and the 450 3 cabin, the 330 became the 360, the 310 crusader became the 340 Crusader coinciding with a number of improved modifications. In 1999 they introduced the Commando range starting with the 370 In 2003 as part of an ongoing restructuring programme to ensure Birchwood's future as a manufacturer of bespoke power boats for the UK, European and US markets, The Nottingham based subsidiary Company Birchwood Marine (International), introduced the new luxury Challenger flybridge 460 designed in partnership with Birchwood USA specifically targeted at the US Market. The new US Luxury line followed a major investment by the Company and part of a major re-branding plan iniative. They also launched the new sportsbridge 510 Commando to increase their involvement with the Mediterranean market. The sleekly styled 510 is the boat the company had to make to show dealers and the buying public that the company meant business. The press agreed with him, focusing on the improved quality of the boats that reflected the companys bolder styling in no uncertain terms.
